Purchases with the card accumulate points at the rate of one point for every dollar spent. Points count the same regardless of whether it is furniture, clothing, or some other type of merchandise or service. Once you reach 100 points in the same month, they can be redeemed for a $10 gift card. There is a monthly limit of 1,000 points, which means that the maximum amount that can be earned is $100 in each month.

Those who spend at least $500 in a single day, on two different occasions, qualify for a Gold card or Gold card. If the amount is doubled to $1,000, at least for each purchase, on two different days, the gift will be a Platinum card or Platinum card.

These tiers earn points at the same rate as the basic card, but receive a number of additional perks, such as discount coupons, vouchers, free shipping, access to exclusive events and even a birthday gift.

Cardholders may also qualify for special financing on major purchases such as furniture, jewelry, appliances and other high-value items.

Who benefits more?

Frequent JC Penney customers get an extra 10% on everything, but it’s the compulsive shoppers who benefit the most. By qualifying for award levels, these customers can take advantage of the opportunity to save during special events while earning regular points.

Warehouse giants like Macy’s and Kohl’s are the main competitors, with reward cards similar to JC Penney’s.

The Macy’s credit card it belongs to the American Express network and can be used anywhere AmEx is accepted. All purchases made within the first two days after signing up are 20% off up to $100. Cardholders can get up to 3% off all purchases at Macy’s and 1% elsewhere. TOUsing the card earns rewards of up to $25 in gift certificates, depending on their membership levels.

The kohl’s credit card is not affiliated with Visa or MasterCard and can only be used for in-store purchases. Kohl’s offer is up to 25% off the first purchase and 15% off the second. In addition, it guarantees 12 special offers of 15 to 30% discount every year.

Those who spend more than $600 qualify for an upgrade to Most Valuable Client (MVC) status and get at least 18 special offers.

JC Penney credit card: The fine print

The JC Penney credit card is clearly intended for frequent shoppers as unspent points expire at the end of each month.

The annual percentage rate (APR or Annual Percentage Rate) is 26.99%, with which we can say that its rate is considerably higher than most cards issued by banks and financial institutions (around 15% for clients with good credit). Retail reward cards generally have higher APRs, but Macy’s and Kohl’s offer lower rates than JC Penney.

JC Penney’s cardholder service department does not have a good image when it comes to customer service. Complaints range from accidental charge-offs and erroneous slurs on credit reports, to a lackluster and confusing website. In contrast, both the Macy’s and Kohl’s cards show a high degree of customer satisfaction.
