About the Shedd Aquarium
One of the most exciting visitor attractions to Chicago, Illinois is the Shedd Aquarium, a public indoor aquarium that opened to the public in 1930. With an extensive collection of marine animals, the aquarium is home to more than 32,000 animals and is considered be one of the largest indoor aquariums in the world. More than two million tourists visit the Shedd Aquarium each year to enjoy aquatic wonders such as thirty species of dolphins, belugas, bluegills, manta rays, sea otters and turtles, sturgeons and many other underwater species from around the world.

As well as presenting the world with a wonderful aquatic panorama, Shedd also plays an important role in the preservation of many endangered underwater species and their habitats. Shedd experts explore the country and different parts of the world to rescue and rehabilitate aquatic animals and habitats that are in danger of disappearing from the face of the earth, such as the rock iguanas of the Bahamas. They also work to restore the health of bodies of water, turning them into livable and sustainable habitats for animals. Shedd Aquarium’s work toward preserving aquatic life has been recognized by American Humane, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums with awards and certification.
